The Greek flag

How and where the Greek flag was born

The first modern Greek flag was made on Skiathos, the frame with which it was made is still inside the Evangelist Monastery of the Annunciation.

The flag consists of five horizontal blue stripes, alternating with four white ones, for a total of nine stripes. Nine, like the syllables of the national motto “Eλευθερία ή Θάνατος” (Freedom or Death).

To the left of the stripes we find, however, a white cross, a sign of gratitude of the people towards the Orthodox Church. Monasteries were the only places, in times of Turkish domination, where it was possible to continue - albeit secretly - the teaching of the Greek language and culture, thus allowing the development of an ever stronger national identity in contrast with the Islamic one of the invaders.

Furthermore, the monks fought personally alongside the Hellenic people, in favor of liberation from the Ottoman Empire.
