Easter in Santorini

The best Greek island to spend at Easter

Well, if you want to spend Easter on a Greek island, the right choice, both for logistical reasons given the scarcity of flights at that time, and for scenographic reasons, is certainly the Island of Santorini, in particular during Holy Week in the village of Pyrgos.

Friday is famous for the Epitaph funeral procession, during which worshipers hold lighted candles along the way. On Saturday, every house in Pyrgos is lit with dozens of candles and several candlelit processions march through the streets creating a surreal atmosphere.

All of santorini is transformed into a living nativity scene full of events.

  • Megalochori: a feast is organized on Holy Saturday in honor of Lazarus where a 12-metre high cross decorated with flowers is raised in the central square of the village.
  • Oia: the hub of all celebrations is the church of Platsani and Good Friday is the arrival of the procession of the town.
  • Fira: two large processions are organized there are two processions through the city which meet in the vicinity of the orthodox cathedral of John the Baptist.
  • Fireworks are fired on all the squares of the island during the Sunday celebrations.

Easter is certainly a beautiful time to visit Santorini, but you have to be organised. The Greeks are very religious and therefore during the holidays many businesses remain closed. Very few taverns/restaurants on Santorini organize dinners for Good Friday and Easter Sunday, so it is advisable to choose in advance and carefully.

We will update the page soon with some recommended taverns.
